Elephant riding is a special kind of highlight. Riding elephants is one of the tourist attractions of Chiang Mai and Thailand as a whole. However, the opinion of tourists is very divided. We would like to leave it to each tourist to form their own opinion. The decades-long tradition of using elephants as farm and work animals are long gone. But the elephants are still alive and are still present in very large numbers and are now a real tourist magnet. In the north you will find numerous elephant camps that offer elephant rides. Some providers are less reputable and some are more.
We always recommend choosing an elephant camp where the animals live in a natural environment. The "riding" should not be the main focus and the elephants should not be chained to heavy iron chains. There are numerous elephant camps where you can live and work on the camp for several days. You will learn from a mahout how the animals are fed and bathed. This goes beyond the usual looking and stroking and you gain a wonderful experience. Many camps are also usually dependent on additional donations.
